An international team of researchers at the University of York had discovered a new and revolutionary way of magnetic recording that can transfer up to 200Gbps, more than 300 times the speed of SATA III on hard drives on hard drives with up to 10 times more capacity than the current ones.

The secret behind this new technology lies in a new system of recording by heat pulses. The researchers found that they could record data using only heat, applying ultrashort heat pulses with a laser, changing North-South magnetic orientation of magnetic nanoparticles pairs.

Consecutive heat pulses change the North-South orientation to South-North, which can be perfectly translated into zeros and ones and be used as storage system.

They claimed that this discovery will not only make future magnetic recording devices faster, but more energy-efficient too, since it could be developed a method to use the heat emitted by other components.

Some days ago, the Internet giant Google has been sending its user some e-mails announcing a change in its privacy policies from March 1.
With this move Google intends to unify all its services in one aiming to increase the “user experience” and improve its services.

It consists of a removal of the legal restrictions that had prevented the company from crossing users’ data between its services. Thus, we will find suggestions in Youtube related to the last e-mails we received, for example. Whenever we login in Google, we will get recommendations of search results according to the interests expressed in Google Plus, Gmail or YouTube.

The company explained that with this change they will be able to offer their users the most relevant results on search and information, apart from helping advertisers to find clients, mostly in mobile phones.

People from Google had explained that, in spite of the cross link among different platforms; they will continue their policy of not combining personal information of users gathered by DoubleClick, their advertising network.

CES 2012 - The highlight of the 3rd day

Going on in Las Vegas, going around the CES 2012, visiting stands, talking to manufacturers, searching to show you the highlight of the day.

Nvidia, tablets and Super Cars
Nvidia introduced its 4 core tablets, Tegra 3 and a prototype using Windows 8 as DOS.

Nvidia has decided to disclose some of its features and to show how do the new Metro interface works in a Tegra 3 tablet and a 4 corer processor ARM at 1.3 GHz. Besides, it took the opportunity to show another high definition prototype.

Super Cars powered by Nvidia
The other big news is that Nvidia is going into the motor industry to change it completely. the "Nvidia Motor" booth shows the first more advanced super vehicles that are already manufactured using the Tegra platform to offer apps, navigation services and other extras.

Haier Brain Wave TV
While other companies present voice command controlled TVs, the Chinese company Haier is looking to TV mind controlled. This concept, called "Brain Wave TV" propounds to control the television just by putting on a diadem that works through an electroencephalogram. While a plastic arm touches the forehead, a small device touches the earlobe. The diadem reads the electric activity through the scalp.

Unfortunately, it has not been proved how the interface will be on TV and whether it will be compatible with other devices such as videogames consoles. It was shown with a mini-game where the user tried through concentration to make a barrel explode, nothing simple and which it does not work that well. The company assures that the Researching and Developing Department is still working to improve the mechanism.

Sony, LG y Google TV
Sony will keep on betting on Google TV as it has confirmed its compromise to expand the number of screens connected to this system. At the same time, LG unveiled its first screen equipped with Google's television system so as to participate in the race of Google's connected screens.

CES 2012 - The highlight of the first day.

Microsoft - Opening and farewell.
Liven up by a Gospel group, Microsoft's Executive President Steve Ballmer, made the opening speech at the fair.

The Computer History Museum was created in 1996 in Mountain View, California, at the very heart of Sillicon Valley, a stone's throw from Googleplex. The Museum is dedicated to preserve the artefacts from computing era as well as to present the stories behind each one of them, their evolution and impact in our lives.

The Computer History Museum is home to the biggest and most important computing collection of the world. Among its objects it can be seen the super computers Cray-1 and Cray-3, a model of the Utah Teapot (used in the 3D renders), an Apple I, a Babbage machine (a purely mechanical calculator) designed in 1847-1849 and that was rebuilt based on the original blueprints, a replica of the Atanasoff-Berry computer, the Palm Pilot telephone (pioneer of the age of mobile computing), among other hundreds of rarities. The collections consists of about 90.000 objects, photographs and movies, as well as 1.200 metres of catalogued documents and several hundreds of software gigabytes.

Inside the wide facilities there are several thematic areas, we have the area on the history of videogames consoles, the history of the supercomputers, personal computers and the one on computer chess games.

We could visit Googleplex, the headquarters of Google Inc, placed in Mountain View, Santa Clara, California, near San José. We rambled through the main courtyard and among other details we saw the micro swimming-pools, the Volleyball court and near them, in the outskirts of Building 43, a Tyrannosaurus Rex surrounded by pink flamingos.

Google take up with improving the environment with a project to install solar panels on roofs of buildings in its campus, which generate a total of 1600 kws, the energetic equivalent of a thousand homes in California.

Intel creates a specialized division for the mobile communication market

It seems that AMD won’t be the only one directing their efforts towards the creation of new mobile platforms, since it seems that their rival, Intel, has come back to the mobile market after leaving the market 5 years ago. For that reason, they have created a new division taking resources and staff from four separated groups.

This new department makes sense at the time of exploiting resources and speeding development processes, since we are talking about devices that will have a lot of hardware in common, focusing exclusively in mobile products as smartphones, tablets, wireless communication technologies and netbooks.

The new division will be leaded by two people: Mike Bell, who arrived last year in Intel from Apple, where he was vice president and worked in the development of the iPhone. He also had important positions in Palm, so it seems the ideal resume.
The second in charge is Hermann Eul, old executive of Infineon, that has been a while working at Intel’s communication division. Don’t forget that the company of the processors acquired this corporation to work independently in the mobile communication division.

Intel intends to enter the world of Smartphones with the ultimate technologies and it seems that nobody left NFC out of them. The agreement was made with Inside Secure, which will provide Intel with its Microread, Secureread and Open products.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime- The expectation is almost over

The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer is making us wait, since it won’t be released until 2012. However, the corporation has already detailed the specifications of this tablet.

It will be the first tablet of the market with the new Nvidia Tegra 3 chips and 1 GB RAM. A quad-core processor that promises a great step forward in performance and it also enhances the autonomy of the models incorporating it.

The external design is also renewed and it turns to be impressive, it hardly surpasses the 8mm thick and its metallic case weights 586 grams. The metal used for its construction was Aluminum. It will come in two colors, Amethyst Grey and Champagne Gold.

The screen is another feature that stands out, with 10.1” multi-touch and Super IPS and a resolution of 1280x800 with a HDMI port. The 178° viewing angle and the Corning Gorilla glass display are maintained like the previous model.

This Transformer Prime features a micro SD card slot, HDMI port and minijack audio port. Don`t look for an USB port, it is only available in the board with keyboard. It`s also WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and comes with Bluetooth 2.1. It has ASUS SonicMaster technology. The front camera is a 1.2 MP model, while the rear camera will have an 8MP back illuminated CMOS sensor, auto-focus, flash and a F2.4 aperture and will provide 1080p videos.

The keyboard, sold separately, weights 500 grams, so we are talking about the perfect hardware to work on the go, if we can work well with Android. The new Transformer Prime comes to the market with the 3.2 version but it promises the Android 4.0 won`t be any mystery for it.

The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer has been announced but the date still remains as a secret. It was indicated at the beginning of 2012.

Nokia develops nanoparticles to repel water

Nokia developed a system based in nanoparticles which is capable of repelling water in our devices, named Hydrophobic Nanocoating. It’s a coating of nanoparticles for mobile phones capable of retaining air in its structure repelling water actively.

Thanks to a crystal treated with nanoparticles, if we drop a liquid it doesn’t spread but, on the contrary, it slides until disappearing from the surface without leaving traces.

Trying hydrophobic nanoparticles in the interior of several gadgets will be very useful to protect our electronic devices from liquids.

Even though for now Nokia pretends to include it to mobile phone’ displays it is probable that its use will be extended to all kind of devices.

Considering the popularity acquired by You Tube in the new generations and its power as future platform for content distribution in all of their aspects, the TV stations of all around the world are trembling before the giant rival that You Tube will entail. Google has invested millions of dollars in this project and among the participants there will be News Corp, Madonna with a dancing channel, Shaquille O’Neal with a sport Channel and many others.

The great advantage of YouTube as distribution platform, apart from its popularity, is that it can be available from every device with and Internet connection, globally. These will be the foundations of Google’s power to face the creation and distribution of classic content, not only as amateur or second option, but as main character. It is expected that the first channels arrive within a month and they will remain, at least for one year, with global availability.

Asus Maximus IV for Ivy Bridge

Around March, 2012 we will see the new boards for the new Intel standard, the Ivy Bridge platform, successor of the Sandy Bridge. They will use the same 1155 socket of their predecessors.

It is known that most of current boards will support the new processors with a small BIOS update of but even though, there are some manufacturers that will introduce the new models of the motherboard like the Asus Maximus IV GENE-Z/GEN3 that will support PCI Express 3.0 and compatibility with subsequent Ivy Bridges.

ASUS (like other manufacturers of boards such as GIGABYTE) assures that many other models will get BIOS updates that will make them compatible with PCle 3.0 and make room for this new range of processors. The list is very large and it includes boards with chipsets Z68, P67, H67 and H61. They had offered also a list of boards that will be able to use Ivy Bridge processors in 22 nanometers, always with the corresponding BIOS update.

This is good news for the owners of motherboards wanting to update one of the new Intel processors.

Lytro, the camera that allows focus after the fact

Lytro is the camera that allows you to adjust the focus after the fact. This camera is different from the design that resembles those old black boxes to take basic shots. In fact it “is” a plenoptic camera that will record the information of the light not only of the point we are focusing, but of every point of the image. Thus, later in the edition, just by clicking on the area we want to highlight, the focus and depth of field vary in real time, until leaving it as we want it. The Lytro camera stills places next to the sensor micro-lenses that gather information from the light.

The distinctness of the camera turns its specifications equally distinctive. Thus, the images are recorded in the LFP format (light field picture) and the resolution of the system is of 11 megarays, in reference to the amount of rays of light captured by the system and it is equivalent to 22 megapixels.

In the box of the Lytro camera we can find an LCD screen that helps us to compose and observe what we want to remember. In the interior there is a lens with a luminosity of f/2 and an 8x zoom, together with two buttons: power and shutter. We don´t need more because the Lytro camera will capture all the information of the snapshot and we will be able to edit it afterwards almost as if we were in front of the scene again and having control of what we are doing. This task is performed by some software that, as informed by the company, for the moment will be available only for Mac.

This sort of futuristic compact will be available in two versions: with an internal memory of 8 GB and capable of storing 350 photos and with 16 GB of storage. They will cost $400 and $500, respectively.

Samsung and a breakthrough in LED technology

Samsung has announced that their engineers succeeded in the creation of “crystalline Gallium Nitride on amorphous glass substrates”, allowing to build large products from regular glass panes, such as the one used for windows.

This transcendental improvement in growing LED screen is important for two reasons: lower cost of the final product and its possibilities.

Even though the regular size of Gallium Nitride LEDs doesn’t surpass the 5 centimeters, the people from the Institute of Technology of Sammy believe that the new fabrication process will increase LED’s size to as much as 400 times larger than current products.

“In ten years, window panes will double as lighting and display screens, giving personality to buildings,” said a Samsung researcher who participated in the project.

SD Eye-Fi, Storage + Wi-Fi

ScanDisk and Eye-Fi join forces to improve the distribution of cards with Wi-Fi and as a result it was born the: SD Eye-Fi, a new storage card that includes Wi-Fi connectivity for our cameras. We can use it to transfer photos or videos to a computer, phone or tablet within the reach of the WiFi net, without the need of wires.

An interesting utility included is the Eye-Fi View that makes backup copies of our files in the cloud associated in the cards.

The weak points is that they can only send images, not receive them and that initially they will be sold only in the European market with two storage sizes, 4Gb and 8Gb. It supports 802.11b/g/n standards.

The new Intel platform, Sandy Bridge E, brings as a novelty the inclusion of the Quad Channel technology. This technology allows us to optimize the use of the different RAM modules installed in the equipment reducing latency times by sending the information to the RAM to several modules, not all to the same one. Thus, it is advisable to use as RAM modules as memory channels are allowed by our mainboard. The Sandy Bridge E will have a minimum of 4 sockets and a maximum of 8 sockets. If we install RAM modules of 8 GB to each of these modules we obtain 64 GB RAM DDR3 in one computer.

The manufacturer of Kingston memories carried a show of a kit of quad channel memory with 64 GB of capacity which is expected to be released after the Sandy Bridge-E come to the market.

The kit shown during a conference includes 8 DDR3 modules of high performance, each with 8GB of RAM and works with a basic frequency of 2,400MHZ with some unknown intervals for the moment.

It was a practical demonstration made by Kingston to show what they are capable of. In the domestic ambit there is little use for it, since the applications we use everyday work just as well whether we have 8 or 200 GB of RAM. Nevertheless, it can be very useful for the companies working with images of huge dimensions, videos, renders, etc.

The Intel Sandy Bridge-E processors and the main boards that come with them will be available from the mid-November. The initial collection of CPUs will include three models, two of which will use a 6-core design, while the third will pack only four computer cores.

Claremont, solar-powered Intel microprocessor

Intel has developed a “Near Threshold Voltage Processor”. This chip, code-named “Claremont”, works with ultra low voltage circuits, close to threshold, or turn-on voltage, of the transistors. This chip runs fast when needed, or consume just milliwatts of power when there when the workload is light enough. This means that it can work with green energies, like the solar power. Thus, Intel is unveiling one of its most interesting developments with an eye to the future: the solar-powered microprocessor.

Claremont is based in the Intel Pentium of 1996, a new modified architecture over the original P5 aiming to achieve the minimal power consumption. We are speaking of about 10 milliwatts, a real achievement considering that current CPUs are hovering around 15 or 20 watts. For that purpose they had modified both the board itself and the processor settings, underclocking it and reducing the voltage. Besides, they have implemented new techniques to achieve a better efficiency, even though it doesn’t seem to be enough for everyday tasks.

Claremont is not going to be a product itself, so we are not going to see processor with this name, but the knowledge acquired with this product could be applied in other computing devices. So it is possible that the next generation of Intel CPUs have a very low power consumption thanks to this work.

PCI Express 4.0 for 2015

The announcement was made by Al Yanes, President of the PCI SIG during a meeting with the Semi Accurate publication.

PCI SIG announced at the end of June that it formed a group for the research for the fourth generation of the PCI Express standard. That team included members of companies such as Intel, AMD, Hewlett-Packard and IBM.

For the organization PCI-SIG (Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group) in charge of the creation of the PCI standards, the final PCIe 4.0 standard will be ready by 2014 for the manufacturers to create products this year to be released in 2015.

It is said that it will double the efficiency of the PCIe 3.0 turning from 8 to 16 GT/s (gigatransfers per second on PCI data bus). We are talking about speeds per lane, and we must consider that each PCIe bus usually has up to 16 lanes (16x).

In addition to the increase of transfer speeds of the standard, developers will also have to reduce the latencies of the PCIe interface Gen 4, apart from remain alert to other aspects of the standard, such as, for example, error fixing, a deeper juxtaposition or the notification and control of errors.

First developers API for Google+

As Google commented with this API the developers will be able to build apps with the possibility to share content, identify yourself and keep a conversation in Google+.

Considering that the social network Google+ is characterized for giving the user a great control over the visibility of the publications, this API, is –initially- centered in the publications made in a public manner –not limited to concrete circles-. The developers will have to register their apps, obtain a code (key) and, from there on, use the family of functions that Google had made available for the developers.

Hybrid Memory Cube. The next step in DRAM evolution

Hybrid Memory Cube is being developed by Intel and Micron and there are already some functional prototypes which sustain transfer rates of 1 terabit per second (about 128 GB/s) and minimize the energy impact up to seven times, claiming to be 10 times faster than DDR3 memories.

Intel´s idea -appart from modifying the 2D structure of the memory (one chip next to the other) and changing it to 3D (one chip stacked on top of the other)- is adding a layer that undertake the input information and transfer it to the memory chip. No more chips looking for the information to be stored, there is a logic layer now to send them the information. Intel an Micron are adding an intermediary for RAM management where every group of bit to be stored goes.

Hybrid Memory Cube is barely a project under development but it promises to be a milestone in the evolution of DRAMs.

Photovoltaic displays- Recycling its own light

A group of scientists at the University of California claim that they have developed a method to that allow displays of mobile phones and tablets to feedback with the light unused.

The screens of the pocket devices caused the 80 and 90% of the power consumption of batteries. However up to a 75% of the light emitted by our displays is completely wasted.

The structure of an LCD display has two polarized layers between which there are the molecules of liquid crystal. These layers allow the light to pass through them selectively, partially blocking or filtering it according to the contents of the display.

The idea of this group of researchers was to replace these polarized layers by photovoltaic polarized layers that, literally, harvest the remaining light and turn it back to the battery.

The invention would even allow the whole display to work as a solar cell, capturing also the ambient light in repose. The results of this research will be published in September in a new edition of the magazine Advanced Materials.

Active standard 3D glasses

In order to use the active 3D glasses you need to synchronize the alternating images in the screen with the LCD lenses, namely, connect the glasses with the screen through a stereo sync signal connector. So far the active 3D glasses type weren’t compatible between different brands. That’s why Sony, Samsung and Panasonic have joined the manufacturer of 3D glasses XpanD to develop a new standard together.

Nowadays the different 3D equipment brands are not fully compatible. Ethan Rasiel, director of public relations at Samsung said that some major changes will make the differences aside and implement a standard for this type of technology so these glasses will be compatible between brands or at least among the products of the three participating companies.

The idea is that the new standard speeds up the implementation of 3D equipment at home and at the same time, be backward compatible with 3D TVs that are already marketed.

New glasses out of this project will incorporate different types of connections simultaneously as Samsung, for example, use Bluetooth for its glasses, while its partners, Sony and Panasonic, connect via infrared.

iOS 5:

iCloud:

Skype goes down globally

Microsoft stars with the wrong foot, just after a couple of weeks since they acquired Skype. The free calling service is having problems worldwide on Thursday the 26th of May, affecting more than eight millions users, and only a few days after the company has introduced their first upgrades on the program, compelling a lot of customers to update their Skype with a download.

In Twitter, there are hundreds of thousands people, who are complaining because Skype has stopped working, the problem appears when they try to login and the program hangs.
Skype’s spokesman, Peter Parkes, has rushed to confirm that “some people might be having troubles to login in Skype”, besides he explained that they are working to fix the problem, and apologized for the inconveniences.

It is to expect that the issue will be among the hottest topics on the social networks today.

At the moment the company has not yet announced how long the fault is going to last.

Acer and Samsung, the first companies to release Chromebooks

Google made the announcement of an agreement with Acer and Samsung to market Chromebooks laptops with Chrome as the operating system, to be released in mid-June with prices ranging the 349 dollars. The most distinctive feature of Chromebooks is that neither the user data nor the applications and multimedia content are stored in the laptops, but on remote servers, aka the Cloud.

Google has explained that the Chrome OS is designed for people who want to be constantly and instantly connected, with a long battery life, built-in security and access to all data wherever they are.

The Samsung Series 5, will include a 12.1 screen, high definition webcam, 2.0 USB ports, 4 in 1 memory card reader, a touch panel, an 8 hours of constant use battery and it will be released in two different colors. It will also be available in 2 versions, one with WiFi connectivity only and another with 3G connectivity as well.

The Acer Chromebook will come with a 11.6 inches high definition CineCrystal LED-backlit screen, an 8 hours battery life, fully interactive touch panel, WIFI and, like the Samsung model, 3G connectivity will be optional.

Both, Acer and Samsung Chromebooks will feature a dual core processor, cloud services connectivity and offline capabilities. The annual subscriptions for schools and students will cost 20 dollars monthly while business customers will pay $28.

Google along with Samsung are developing a desktop hardware version called Chromebox, for those who prefer these types of computers which will have similar characteristics to Chromebooks.

Samsung improves tablet screens with "PenTile" technology

The prototype is a 10.1 inches LCD screen that comes with a resolution of 2650 by 1600 pixels, with 298.9 ppp. It also allows a 40% less power consumption and a 300 cd/m2 luminance in its safe energy mode, while in its exterior mode offers a luminance of 600 cd/m2.

Samsung is developing the screen along with Nouvoyance, and it will show it at the SID Display 2011. It is expected that by the end of this year, it will be ready to be used by the first device manufacturers.

Microsoft acquires Skype for $8.500 million

After a week that it was speculated that Skype would be in talks with Google and Facebook for a possible merger, acquisition or joint project, newspapers and specialized technology blogs such as All Things Digital y GigaOM, ensure that the deal has already been done and it would be announced this Wednesday 11th May. Both, Microsoft and Skype made no comments.

The Wall Street Journal indicates that the agreement could reach up to $8500 million, which would be the biggest purchase in the history of Microsoft.
This acquisition will allow Microsoft to compete with services such as GTalk, Google Voice and Apple’s FaceTime, one of the most important bets of iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
It is therefore not surprising that Microsoft’s eyes are placed on Skype as its communication system for Windows Phone 7 phones which is now being developed with Nokia. If Microsoft adds Skype to its instant messaging service Windows Live Messenger, it will create a stronger rival for Google and Apple.

Facebook, with Microsoft´s investment, could also benefit from such agreement. For some time the network has begun to integrate with the Microsoft messaging service, and it is quite likely to do the same with Skype.

PlayStation Network service and Qriocity crashed down leaving millions of people unable to enjoy the online games while the engineers of the Japanese corporation were fighting against the clock to “restructure” the system. After being silent for days, the company reported last night that some hackers had gained access users data like passwords, postal addresses, birthdates and banking information (credit cards) of their clients. This intrusion forced them to take the decision of suspending the service the last Wednesday, April 20th.

70 million PlayStation Network users in the whole world have been affected. According to the official site of Playstation, this is the letter sent to all of its clients explaining the situation of the interruption of the service:

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. The following email has been sent to all PSN registrants; please read the help and support FAQ for more information.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

The Department of Defense has chosen Google's Android mobile operating system to develop a new application of military communication: a prototype device called JBC-P (Joint Battle Command-Platform).

The American Department of Defense has announced that they will launch a kit of apps based on Android for the soldiers in the battlefield.

They are looking for developers to create encrypted apps with high security levels.

Mitre is the laboratory in charge of the creation of the work environment and the device chosen to perform the tests for future apps weights 900-grams.

They are currently testing apps that include a GPS to keep track of friends and enemies, terrestrial tactic reports and messaging apps for medical evaluation and other basic apps, such as an address book and Open Office.

The army will release the development kit on July, according to lieutenant colonel Mark Daniels, product manager of JBC-P.

This decision by the military makes it look and believe that the Android platform is as secure as usable for all fields.

CL-OLED the future for screens.

Researchers from the University of Toronto have found a way of manufacturing OLED screens using chlorine to reduce the complexity of traditional OLED devices and improve its efficiency all at once. It entails a great advance for futuristic technology which is practicaly stucked mainly in relation to devices with big screens and even for light devices.

The result, a spectacular increase for OLED efficiency together with an important decrease in the cost of this technology that seems to trace the future of screen devices.

It seems that chlorine, applied by an UV light assisted process that allows to control toxicity, increases the electrical transport index in OLED pannels. Thus, the CL-OLED, as it is called, literally doubles its efficacy, with a luminosity of 10,000 cmd2, and it’s easier to manufacture.

The results of this research have already been published in the Science Magazine and it’s a matter of time for the pannel manufacturers to become interested for this new patent.

The rumor has come true, Amazon has launched its own music storage and streaming service from the cloud, called Amazon Cloud Player and with this move it overcomes Apple and Google with a service that looks good.

Although, for the moment, it’s only available in The USA, it’s good to know that another service to buy multimedia content is arriving.

Amazon Cloud Player plays the music we have stored in the Amazon Cloud Drive, an online hard disk of their own creation. We can play it in two ways: from a web page or from other Android devices. The advantages are clear, according to the people responsible: after streaming the music we want to play online, we don’t have to worry about syncs, devices, software actualizations or hardware to carry our music.

Unlike Spotify, which is based on monthly subscriptions, this Amazon Cloud Player consists of 5Gb virtual storage (extendable up to 20Gb) where we can store the music purchased at Amazon’s store and –apparently- the music acquired at iTunes Store, too.

Seemingly, the development is already completed and functional. However, the reason for the delay is the music industry. The 4 American music giants are not very happy with the idea that user can acquire songs in the cloud and may access them from any device or location. Google accuses the Chinese government

Google accuses the Chinese government of interfering with its e-mail services in that country, making it hard for user to sign in to their Gmail accounts. In the middle of an Internet repression intensified after the incidents in the Middle East.

Google has received a great number of complaints from Chinese users and advertisers during the last weeks related to Gmail disrupts. There have been many problems sending emails and with incoming emails. They had been delayed and lost in most cases.

Google sources have confirmed that there were no technical problems on their side with the email service or its main website. They also said that it’s a government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail.

No one has confirmed from Google whether they have articulated the issue directly to Chinese functionaries or not and, until now, there is no answer from Chinese authorities to the accusations from the Google.

The Taiwanese corporation has incorporated a great deal of improvements on the Acer Aspire One D257 but there isn’t any revolutionary change. All the same it’s still a great option for anyone looking for a netbook.
It incorporates 1.66 Ghz Intel Atom N570 dual core or 1.50Ghz Intel Atom N550 processors. In both cases the RAM memory available is a 1 GB or 2 GB DDR3. The storage is 250 GB, 320 GB or 500 GB depending on the version you have.

It supports the connection of an independent monitor, for which you can use a VGA port, although Acer hasn’t incorporated HDMI yet. The D257 trusts the visual power to a 64Mb Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics card. It also includes High-Definition audio support, even though the standards are not specified. The capacity of the HD varies according to the configuration set from 250Gb to 500Gb. It has a memory card slot compatible to SD, MMC, MS, MSPro and XD.
This Acer Netbook comes in three colors: aquamarine, pearl with and black chocolate.
As a novelty, it stands out the incorporation of an Android-based instant boot mode. It lacks better HD content support, even though the Aspire One D257 is a stylish Netbook and with pretty solid components. There is no information regarding to date of release or prices yet.

HP to introduce 7" WebOS tablet this year

The 9.7" HP Touchpad, and with WebOs that makes so many people fall in love with, will have a little brother: the codename is HP Opal, even though it is expected to change.

It will have a 7" display and it is said that it has an extradimensional thickness, 13cm, which could be a disadvantage but it’s compensated if you use it to carry a good battery.
The display will have a 1.024x768 resolution and, of course, is multi-touch.

Few details have been given apart from the ones mentioned above and a WebOS operative system that has a tablet-mobile synchronization as a strong point. It is expected that HP Opal is released on September, although the date is unofficial and might be changed in the future.

Google accounts gets 2-step authentication

Google is implementing a new feature for every user: 2-step verification for every account.
This function will be opt-in but, when enabled, it will require the users to insert not only their user names and their passwords but also an access code generated by a mobile app or received on their phones through a call or an SMS.

The option must be activated in the account configuration. After that, besides asking your normal password to sign in to Gmail or Google Docs, the service will ask you a backup password which is a code sent to your mobile phone by SMS. You can also download an app for Android, iOs or BlackBerry that will prompt the codes –and that probably will be the best option outside the United States.

There is also the possibility of remember an access code in a PC for up to 30 days, so you don’t have to generate a new code every time you sign in, while avoiding other users to sign in from other devices.

“As we announced to our Google Apps customers a few months ago, we've developed an advanced opt-in security feature called 2-step verification that makes your Google Account significantly more secure by helping to verify that you're the real owner of your account,” wrote Nishit Shah, Product Manager of Google Security.

Now it's time to offer the same advanced protection to all of our users. 2-steps verification requires two independent factors for the authentication, as you can see in your web site: your password, apart from a code obtain using your mobile phone”, he announced.

AMD is preparing its 8-native core microprocessors for 2011

The so called AMD Zambezi -the AMD 9 series chipsets- have a release date for the second trimester of 2010 with great news. The first are these 8 native cores that will come with high range models and whose performance will be just like many others Core i/ (930 and 950) but at a lower cost.

Other news are the DDR3 compatibility in dual and even quad channel, even though it seems that not all of the Zambezi will bring this characteristic. We will also see support for new SSE5 instructions, 32nm, HyperTransport 3.1 and, of course, new cache levels (from 8 to 16 MB in the L3).
These forthcoming AMD desktop processors will use the AM3+ socket. The new Zambezi doesn’t support AM3 boards, but you will be able to mount current AM3 processors into AM3+ boards.

There will be two Sothbridges: the SB920 and the SB950, the difference between both will be the SB950’ RAID 5 support, and, of course, the higher price. Both versions support six SATA 6Gbps ports. Its TDP is set in 6w.

NVidia GTX 570 in December

Samsung to announce 4.5” flexible screen

Just in a few days, on November 11th in Japan, at the Flat Panel Display Convention, Samsung will unveil their new 4.5-inch flexible AMOLED displays.
Samsung is releasing the news for the convention little by little. Samsung Mobile Display, the panel division from the South Korean corporation reports that these displays had 800x480-pixel WVGA resolution and offer the same color quality we had already seen in Samsung’s Galaxy S series phones.

It is made with a special plastic material that allows screen flexibility, without image distortion, besides bringing higher resistance. It can be achieved up to a minimal radius of 1cm when folded.

Two issues are being seriously worked in these flexible screens as well as in other developments: refreshing times to end up possible ghosting effects and energy consumption.

Wi-Fi Direct is a wireless communication system developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance, that has as main characteristics the direct connection between devices, just like Bluetooth.

Wi-Fi Direct is a special protocol package that allows the interconnection of Wi-Fi devices without needing any router or access point.

Although the router will continue being necessary for the distribution of the Internet signal (with exception of 3G connections) the possibilities of Wi-Fi Direct are countless. The speed of data transfer is 25 times faster than the one with Bluetooth 2.0, without forgetting the security offered by WPA2. Each Wi-Fi Direct device is potentially a “software-based access point”, something that enables tethering of a connection to the Internet (suppliers are trembling). And to make things better, Wi-Fi Direct has backward compatibility with conventional wireless devices. For example, a Wi-Fi Direct laptop can be used as an access point for a compatible mobile phone with normal Wi-Fi.

The centralization of Wi-Fi Direct has begun, and already there are developers preparing products with this new technology, such as Atheros, Broadcom, Intel, Ralink, Realtek and Cisco, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance.

We are expecting to know more details of this technology, above all in matters of consumption, one of the strong points of their possible competitors, Bluetooth 4.0.

OrtusTech introduces the world’s smallest Full HD display

Sony reader adds two new e-book Readers models: Sony Reader Pocket Edition and Sony Reader Touch Edition, both with e-ink display with 16 levels of grayscale, tactile and with 12 dictionaries. These new Touch and Pocket Readers include 2 Gb of memory and supports PDF and ePub formats.

The Reader Pocket Edition, Sony Reader PRS-350 model, has a smaller full tactile 5 inch screen and a compact light design, a real pocket book. The display will offer 800x600 resolution which, thanks to an incorporated battery will offer up to 7,000 page turns. It is available in silver, pink and blue.

On the other hand, the Reader Touch Edition, Sony Reader PRS-650 model, offers a normal size: a 6 inch, full tactile display and the same resolution, 800x600 pixels. It will come in black, silver and red.

Sony has updated its ultraportable series. This 2010 seems scarcely renewed… but only on the outside.

The new Sony Vaio P Pocket style comes in green, orange, pink and black, the first three colors being quite bright with reference to the first series, which was much more sober.

The Sony Vaio P has been struggling and keeps doing it in this 2010 version, with the high price as almost the only one handicap. It’s not that it doesn’t have any other features to improve, but they remain completely outshined by the high price given to the ultraportable pc. The purchase of this model is only understood if you want the most exclusive model on the market and the best format to carry from one place to another.

The rest of its features are as expected, very stuck for quite a while now: Intel Atom, 2Gb of RAM memory, incorporated graphic card, and battery for 3- 4 hours (that is broadly surpassed by their competitors).

The Sony Vaio P adds an ambient light sensor, a full keyboard with a very comfortable size, built-in 3G, GPS and accelerometer to switch the content of the display depending on how we are holding the ultraportable, as well as a couple of tactile panels at both sides of the screen.

Regardless of its exclusive design, the excessive price for a pc like this is not available for many users. In short, whoever buys it, will be able to boast having the most exclusive portable in the whole world.

Sony Ericsson Live View

Sony Ericsson unveiled this interesting device. It´s a tiny OLED screen, almost as big as a watch, that is basicaly a remote control for Android phones, even though it can also work as an external screen for different devices running on Android 2.0 or higher.

It's called Sony Ericsson Live View and the resemblance in size with a watch is not a mere coincidence, since it can be worn around the wrist.
It's only 3.5 x 3.5 x 1.1 cm and its has a 1.3 inch screen with 128x128 pixel resolution.

Its operation is so simple that it´s reduced to four buttons with which we can control music reproduction, visit Facebook and any other application offered by the developers.

Nvidia Tegra 3 is getting closer

The Nikon D7000 is going to appear in shopwindows from all over the world with very persuasive reasons: magnesium alloy finishing, 16 megapixel sensor capable of capturing images and video recording for 1080p, 39 focus points (9 cross type) and data recording in SDXC cards.

D7000 arrives with an ISO 100-6400 (25.600 equivalent), stereo audio input, the original SDHC or SDXC double input that allows you to insert two cards at a time to ensure that you don´t run out of space in one memory and data goes automatically to the second one.
The optical visor of the new Nikon D7000 is a CMOS model of 16.2 megapixels with an Expeed 2 processor and it will enable rapid 6 frames per second shooting.

As any good digital SLR cammera, this new Nikon D7000 includes the possibility of recording video in many resolutions, the most important is obvious, 1080/24p video recording. Besides, it´s capable of recording at 720/30p. But there is a problem, this D7000, in spite of its qualities in video recording, includes a 20 minute limit of video recording.

Nikon D7000 will be on the market by mid-October for $1,200, if we speak only about the body, but if we add the typical 18-105mm lens, it will cost $1,500.

HP 2310e the new Hewlett-Packard monitor

Hewlett-Packard incorporates this new 23 inch-element to its vast and well-known series of monitors. The HP 2310e stands out for its Full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels) and its slimness, with less than one inch in the thickest part.

In connectivity it incorporates DisplayPort, appart from HDMI and DVI-D. It lacks a standard Vesa mount for a wall or foot support (considering the monitor foot is detachable). The different control buttons under the screen are tactile.

It uses a WLED technology for less consumption, better contrast and more brightness, besides reducing the components to achieve slimmer panel.

It will be on the American market on September 29 and it will cost $289.

Apple acquires exclusive use for Liquidmetal

Apple has recently make an agreement with Liquidmetal Technologies, the company that produces the material that carries its name, to be applied in technological products developed by them for the electronic market.

Liquidmetal is produced since 2003. It is an alloy with metallic properties twice more resistant than Titanium and with a high capacity to resist impacts. This means that the solution could be applied to all of their products to improve their coverage. The material could also be used for other purposes, such as the creation of covers due to its high resistance.

By this agreement, Apple tries to hold back their competitors since by preventing them from using Liquidmetal, they won´t have to worry about the materials used to manufacture other portable computers or laptops.

Cisco wants to buy Skype

At the beginning of August, Skype, the leading Internet phone company, announced that they have begun the process to go public in the USA. Another news, equally significant, is added to this important information related to the well-known service: Cisco System would have already made a bid to buy Skype.

According to a reliable TechCrunch source, Cisco has presented an offer to acquire Skype before they go public.If this is true, we would be facing one of the greatest acquisitions of the year since Skype es expecting an assessment of up to 5,000 million dollars for the total of the company.

During 2005, the auction website eBay acquired the company for 2,600 million dollars. This operation was a complete failure since eBay could not manage what they have and they almost brought Skype to ruin. A while after the purchase and after a lot of quarrel, the phone company VoIP came back to their creators.

In August, 2010 Skype introduced to the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States) the procedures to go public, with which they expect to reach up to 100 million dollars.

Panasonic introduces interchangeable 3d lens for their Lumix cameras

Panasonic has just introduced the new prototype of an interchangeable lens with two sets of 3D lens for cameras using the LUMIX G Micro System that could be on sale before the end of the year.

This new lens will have two sets of lens attached within the lens mount on one, and images will be created from left to right to be rendered with a 3D system. The funny thing is that it creates tridimensional images from the close up to the infinite.

This creation is very important since the captured image of each lens will be slightly different, and that’s the difference that allows to create images offering an illusion of depth and that seem to be in three dimensions.

In addition, Panasonic stated that the advantage of their lens is an easier 3D photo, since there are no distortions between images from left to right.

100GB Blu-ray discs

Sharp has shown that their new blue-violet laser diode allows working in an efficient way to double storage capacity than dual layer Blu-rays.

According to the information provided, the new VR-100BR1 disc can be written only once and it’s associated with BDXL format specifications, which was announced just three month ago by the Blu-ray Disc Association.

TDK, on the other side, said that their new discs will be on sale on September, while Verbatim will do it during the first months of 2011, giving their most outstanding rivals a great edge.

Before you go to buy these discs we have to point that the multimedia based on the BDXL format could reach to 128 GB by adding a fourth layer, but these discs files won’t be compatible with current Blu-ray readers.

U.S. Government legalizes Jailbreaking for iPhone and iPod

A judge in a New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Appeals Court has ruled that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's ban on breaking DRM only applies if you break DRM in order to violate copyright law.

Apple has always been leaning on U.S. laws to claim that Jailbreaking was an illegal practice and that it immediately broke the license agreement accepted when using an iOS device. Thus, Apple felt free to deny the warranty to those performing this practice.

The U.S. Federal Government said about Jailbreaking:
“The decision to allow the practice commonly known as "jailbreaking" is one of a handful of new exemptions from a federal law that prohibits the circumvention of technical measures that control access to copyrighted works. Every three years, the Library of Congress authorizes such exemptions to ensure that existing law does not prevent non-infringing use of copyrighted material.”

Now Apple might been forced to accept every device with Jailbreaking since the EFF has won three DMCA exemptions (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).

Jailbreaking may be a new way in for apps rejected from the App Store and even a meeting point for developers with less means, but also it is a strong piracy resource for applications. Certainly, Apple will try to appeal or modify the law to keep stating that this practice as illegal.
Apart from allowing iPhone jailbreaking, there were announced other important exemptions:

-Allow college professors, and film students and documentary filmmakers to break copy-protection measures on DVDs so they can embed clips for educational purposes, criticism, comments and non-commercial videos.

-Allow people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws.

-Allow cell phone owners to break access control on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.

It's not illegal to break DRM if it's not used to break the law

The DMCA is an amend to the Copyright Act published in 1998, and it established that the prohibition of breaking DRM disposed by the manufacturers in movies, music, software and hardware to prenvent copies or reverse engineering.

According to federal judge Garza from New Orleans (USA), the fact of using cracked software doesn't violate the DMCA if there is a fair use. “Without showing a link between access to material and protection of the copyrighted work, the DMCA's anti-circumvention provision does not apply.” Then, he added: “The owner's technological measure must protect the copyrighted material against an infringement of a right that the Copyright Act protects, not from mere use or viewing.”

It is possible that Garza's decision becomes a precedent and other courts support the legality of breaking DRM for fair use, a vision that would allow the removal of DRMs from your music, movies, releasing your mobile phone or unlocking your console.

Intel Core i7-970´s 6 cores

The second micro-processor from the Gulftown series of the giant is now on sale and has began appearing in the price lists of the best online stores.

Without any official word and almost unadvertized, Intel has began the shipping of its second hexa-core, the Core i7-970, a Gulftown 32nm chip non Extreme Edition, and therefore, without an unlocked multiplier, as opposed to the i7-980x.

It is a high-end micro of about 900 dollars, with a 3.2 GHz clock, 12 MB L3 cache, built-in DDR3 memory controller and 130w consumption.

With the whole i7 series we will find hyperthreading (6 cores that will become 12 threads of performance), turbo-boost and more. In this case, we don´t have built-in GPU, and it will continue working with the Intel x58 chipset and, of course, we are talking about an LGA 1366 socket processor.

ASUS ROG ARES, THE MOST POWERFUL GRAPHIC IN THE MARKET

This graphic monster will have 3,200 stream processors, dual 256-bit bus memory, a special cooling system with its own software to manage it or even increasing the amount of spins. It won´t be necessary, it´s going to be the most powerful graphic you may have, but it will cost about 1,000 dollars.

The ROG ARES uses two GPU AMD Cypress running to a 850MHZ speed with 4Gb of GDDR5 memory to 1.2 GHz. They will come together with a 100mm fan and a series of specific heatsinks of this model ready to cool it. Asus speaks of 6 times more efficient cooling than the standard of the original 5970.

Asus ROG Ares will be a limited edition of 1,000 units. It seems that it´s going to be similar to the Asus MARS 295 but from ATI or, in other words, a unique product, limited almost exclusively to professional overclockers and to be exhibited in fairs.

SONY RELEASES TX9 AND WX5 FOR 3D PHOTOS

Sony has announced two new models, both with a new 12.2MPs CMOS BSI (back-illuminated) sensor, 1/ 2.3” type. Both enable 1080i full AVCHD video recording. Besides, there stand out the three dimensional panoramic sweep or 3D Sweep Panorama mode that offers a 3D image to be displayed in a compatible TV. It´s more than just another function, but surely we will get used to see it.

The 3D shot mode is applied to panoramic images that we can capture with the 3D Sweep Panorama. The trick for doing that is recording up to 100 images of the panoramic image we are making and editing sofware to get an stereoscopic image. To see the result, for now, we can connect the cammera only to a 3D compatible TV through HDMI.

These new models are presented as “compact with an advanced low-noise image system” due to the already known Exmor R sensors.

Another technology included by Sony in their new compact cameras is called BackGround Defocus, with blured background function as if working with an SLR which make it easy to play with this value. The way these compact cammeras make it is by taking two photos, indentifying the image´s background and bluring it to make a sharp foreground image with a very effective Bokeh effect. Other improvements in image treatment in the cammera are the effects to eliminate face defects, and a high speed burst of six frames. Both add a more natural flash mode, and take advantage of the continuous focus, so, we can indicate it which person or object we want to keep focused so it should remain in focus even though we move ourselves or the cammera.

In the video recording mode, Sony is still betting to the AVCHD format which is giving less compatibility problems, and rises video resolution up to 1920x1080 to 60i. There stand out the SteadyShot image stabilizer, the Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar 4x zoom and a wide angle that starts at 25mm. Al these features are for the Sony TX9.

The video mode of the Sony WX5 is completed with f/2.4 G lens. Its 5x zoom and a 2.4” screen, as opposed to TX9´s 3.5” screen.

These new compact cammeras will be released to the market in mid-September.
