Although using light bulbs as speakers is not a bad idea, the chance to get connected to the web through them sounds even better. This idea of transmitting data via LED lights is being tested in China, where connections of up to 2Mbits have been reached.

Panasonic's new VIERAs boast built-in Skype support, HDDs and Blu-ray recorders

Panasonic announced a set of two new VIERA TVs for the Japanese market today, the 37-inch TH-L37R2B and the 32-inch TH-L32R2B. And they somehow managed to squeeze quite a few features and functions into the LCDs, most notably Skype support, a 320 GB HDD and a Blu-ray recorder.

The main difference between the two TVs is that the smaller one only has 1,366×768 resolution, while the bigger one is full HD (both have IPSα panels). Both models feature 20,000:1 contrast ratio and come with 16cm×4.2cm full range speakers, two HDMI ports, an SD/SDXC card slot, DLNA support, VIERA link, and LAN.

Ultra-powerful laser makes silicon pump liquid uphill with no added energy

Researchers at the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics have discovered a way to make liquid flow vertically upward along a silicon surface, overcoming the pull of gravity, without pumps or other mechanical devices. In a paper in the journal Optics Express, professor Chunlei Guo and his assistant Anatoliy Vorobyev demonstrate that by carving intricate patterns in silicon with extremely short, high-powered laser bursts, they can get liquid to climb to the top of a silicon chip like it was being sucked through a straw.

Sharp busts out world's first 3D HD camera for mobile devices

Oh yeah, things just got real. Sharp has announced an industry first today, with its 720p-recordin' 3D camera module. Intended for mobile devices like smartphones and point-and-shoot digicams, this miniature wonder will be sampling in July and hitting mass production before the end of the year. Not much else is known about it at this point -- we can guess it'll cost a pretty penny when it debuts -- but Sharp has penned an effusive press release, which you may explore just past the break.

Sony NEX-5 is small, really really small

What started back in 2008 has become a glorious trend: stuffing DSLR-sized sensors into compact camera bodies. First it was Olympus and Panasonic with its Micro Four Thirds standard followed recently by Samsung's NX10. Now Sony is flexing its digital imaging muscle with the introduction of its own compacts sporting APS-C-sized sensors and interchangeable glass. The NEX-5-- is the "world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera" according to Sony. And by the looks of that comparison shot above with Olympus' diminutive PEN E-PL1, we're guessing that's a pretty accurate assessment.

Organic Light Emitting Transistors might make us forget all about OLED

Still waiting on that big-screen OLED TV? Yeah, so are we, but here's some news that could mean they're coming soon: OLED tech has just been obsoleted. Seriously. We still can't even afford an 11-inch model and now we have to start pining for something new: OLET. That's Organic Light Emitting Transistor, tech that researcher Michele Muccini at the Institute of Nanustructured Materials has just proven can be between two and 100 times as efficient as OLED.

HP unveils Quad-core Envy 14, Envy 17 Laptops

Hewlett Packard has finally unveiled two new laptops that will join the existing Envy lineup - Envy 14 and Envy 17. These are the same laptops that were spotted back in December 2009. The two new HP Envy 14 and Envy 17 join the existing Envy 13 and Envy 15 notebooks. Resembling Apple's MacBook Pro, the new Envy 14 would be made available in U.S. on June 17 while the Envy 17 would be made available on May 19.

GEEKSHIVE AT FURUKAWA'S IBERO-AMERICAN CONVENTION 2010

During May 6th and 7th at Transamerica Hotel in Comandatuba island in the state of Bahia, it was carried out the Furukawa´s Ibero-American Convention. The worldwide manufacter of fiber optic, cable and infrastructure of telecommunication networks and IT had the presence of over 450 guests among distributors and integrators.
The opening was in charge Foad Shaikhzadeh -President of the corporation- and Hiroyuki Doi – Business Director- who spoke about Mercosur´s strategy.
It was introduced the new standard 40/100Gbps, it was explained what it is and where it is applied.

Here we are! Said the Geeks at the First Access Geek 2010

Borras and Co's auditorium was totally overcrowded after the numerous attendance to the event performed in the city of Paraná.

During the event accomplished on Wednesday evening, April 14th, the Geeks had the chance to learn about the projects to be carried out during 2010, to participate of important talks and got to know the products of many of the brands sharing our development.

At the beginning, GeeksHive´s development director, Sebastián Monzón, gave a talk introducing the news and projects to be carried out during 2010.

Right after the presentation of the program to the executives of the schools of Santa Fe. Santo Tome and Paraná, there were given the first talks of our program.

Between November 9th and November 12th, at 4 schools located at the cities of Santa Fe and Paraná there were dictated talks to parents, professionals and teachers of these four establishments.
